If you're thinking that these sound a little 'old hat' or boring, then you might be right. However, if you also consider that the main influencing factors that go into the decision making process when seeking promotional merchandise are the usefulness of the product and the price of the product, then it becomes a little clearer as to why these are so popular.
Pens and paper products such as a notebook are probably the most used items by anyone in an average day and will be kept on hand in a pocket or on a desk close to the user, thus keeping your logo and message infront of them. Canvas / Eco bags are more targeted towards people visiting events and retail outlets, but their longevity and durability of use means they tend to be kept by the user for a longer period after the initial contact.
Of course, this principle also applies to other popular items such as USB memory sticks, mouse mats and mugs, but when you also then add the element of pens, pads and bags being low price into the decision making (particularly within the current economic climate), you can understand why these 3 products are at the top of the list.
